Friday marks the 238th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence and all across this country its citizens will celebrate the federal holiday with picnics, barbeques, baseball games and fireworks.  Count me among the many who have plans to enjoy the day with my kids and watching the night sky light up with kabooms of color.

While I’m munching on hot dogs and corn on the cob with the rest of the millions, I think I’ll create my own independence manifesto and loosen the restrictions on some of the freedoms I enjoy.

I’ve already devoid myself the tyranny of a landline, no longer having to jump up from my chair and run to...

A key to improving memory may lie in a common herb — rosemary.

A study presented at the British Psychological Society’s annual conference in Harrogate showed that the smell of the essential oil from the herb appears to enhance the ability to remember events and complex tasks.

The researchers from the University of Northumbria had 66 adults enter one of two rooms — a room with no scent and a room with a rosemary scent. The participants were then tested on their memory functions by finding hidden objects and passing objects to researchers at particular times.

The subjects in the rosemary-scented room performed better on...

Ok, so I find myself really psyched about the upcoming World Cup match today – the United States versus Germany.    Still riding the emotional wave of the last USA match, I try to conjure up any quirky pre-game rituals that will ensure a win so that “we” can make it in to the final sixteen.

Then my thoughts come to a screeching halt.   What is this?   Where does this enthusiasm come from?   I know next to nothing about soccer…haven’t followed it at all…not until now.  Now MY team is playing!  What does a winning sports team trigger inside so many of us “normal,” ordinary people?   The same thing happened to me...

Chondroitin, glucosamine and methylsulfonylmethane, or MSM, are commonly found, either separately or together as a complex, in supplements marketed for joint health. They are also taken for relieving pain associated osteoarthritis -- a painful degenerative condition that results in stiff, achy joints. These substances may offer anti-inflammatory and pain-relieving benefits, taken alone or in combination.

Glucosamine sulfate is the ideal supplement for joints. For joint pain, many take aspirin or nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs like ibuprofen. While they're effective at suppressing symptoms, they do nothing for cartilage...

The biggest factor that determines how well you age and how long you will live, has a lot to do with how well you live.

1. Eat breakfast every day.

Studies show that people who lived to be 100 years old were consistent breakfast eaters, or consumed breakfast more often than non-breakfast eaters. Also, those who eat breakfast regularly are less likely to develop fatal habits like smoking and excessive drinking. And thanks to all of the benefits of breakfast, the body has an increased chance of warding off disease. Getting a serving of whole-grains, especially in the morning, appears to help maintain stable blood sugar...

Calcium is the most abundant mineral in the body, and serves many crucial functions, including building and maintaining strong bones and teeth, making muscles and nerves work, clotting blood and keeping your heart beating regularly. The average adult’s weight is made up of about two per cent calcium. Most of this is found in the skeleton and teeth – the rest is stored in the tissues or blood. Calcium is vital for healthy teeth and bones.

For women, adult bone mass peaks at about age 30. With aging, bone loss gradually happens and then becomes increased after menopause. So it is important for young women to build good bone...

Garcinia Cambogia is a small fruit that resembles a miniature pumpkin, and is green to pale yellow in color.  Also called tamarind, this plant is native to Indonesia, but also grows in India, Southeast Asia, and West and Central Africa. It has long been used in traditional South Asian dishes, including curries and chutneys. Many also use the fruit for curing fish and preservation. The extract, Hydroxycitric Acid, from its fruit and rind is popular in many natural weight loss products, because it suppresses the appetite and enhances the rate of the fat burning process.

The beauty behind Garcinia Cambogia is that HCA inhibits an...
