7 Minerals that Everyone Needs

Our bodies perform amazing feats every day. The millions of tiny cells in our bodies require essential nutrients to grow, develop and work together symbiotically. These essential nutrients, those that our bodies need but cannot produce, include minerals, which are inorganic substances found in foods.  We need a proper mineral balance to keep our immune system strong and healthy.

Here are seven minerals that everyone needs:

Calcium

Our bodies need lots of it! It’s found in milk, leafy green vegetables, and fish with bones like salmon.  Our bodies need calcium to build strong bones and teeth.  Calcium also plays a role in nerve transmissions, muscle function, hormone secretion, it helps regulate our heartbeats and move our muscles.

Potassium

Potassium controls the electrical activity of your heart, making it vital to maintaining a normal heart rhythm. Your body also needs it to build proteins, break down and use carbohydrates, maintain the pH balance of the blood and support normal growth.  Many foods contain potassium, including beef, fish, chicken, cantaloupe, potatoes, tomatoes and of course bananas.

Sodium

Too much sodium can increase a person’s risk for developing high blood pressure, however, our bodies needs some sodium to stimulate nerve and muscle function, maintain the correct balance of fluid in our cells and support the absorption of other nutrients including chloride, amino acids and glucose.

Magnesium

Our bodies need magnesium to support more than 300 biochemical reactions.  Magnesium supports muscle and nerve function, keeps our hearts beating regularly, builds strong bones and boosts our immunity.  Apricots, bananas, soybeans, nuts, whole grains and green vegetables serve as good sources of magnesium.

Phosphorus

Phosphorus plays an important role in building strong bones and teeth, producing proteins our bodies need and repairing cells. Peas, peanuts, dried fruits, bananas, oranges, beans, potatoes, yogurt, and meat all contribute phosphorus to our diets.

Copper

It is a necessary part of the body's ability to produce hemoglobin. It also works together with iron in the formation of red blood cells. Without copper, our bodies could not complete the process of building the bones that make up the skeletal system.  We can get copper by eating beans, raisins, chocolate, nuts, meat, and shellfish.

Zinc

It is one of the minerals that is critical for keeping our immune system strong. It fights infection, making us less likely to catch a cold or the flu, helps wounds heal, helps women have healthier pregnancies and even keeps your senses of taste and smell sharp.  We can get the zinc we need by eating oysters, crab, beef, pumpkin seeds and mushrooms.

Without minerals all the other components of the body would be unable to function properly.  You can have all the air, water, protein, carbohydrates, fats, and vitamins you want, but you won’t be a fully functioning organism without a complete balance of minerals.
